63 Medium and Large Companies
Affected by COVID Emergency -
Trade Union

Sofia, March 31 (BTA) - Sixty-three medium and large companies with over 37,585 employes have been affected by the COVID-19 emergency, a survey by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (CITUB) released on Tuesday suggests.

It offers a snapshot by March 27 of the social tensions within businesses and institutions and the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the survey, 78 per cent of affected companies have allowed workers to take paid leave, while 22 per cent have let them take unpaid leave. Some 13 per cent of companies have been forced to lay off workers.

With the exception of the hospitality industry and tourism, the largest number of affected companies are in manufacturing, automotive parts making, auto repairs and culture. They are located mainly in Dimitrovgrad, Blagoevgrad, Kazanlak, Razlog, Bansko, Burgas, Rousse and Gabrovo.

The auto parts industry is among the worst affected.

The study has found that many people prefer to take paid leave now for fear that they won't be able to do that in the summer and in order to protect themselves potentially from COVID infection. RY/PP
