An exhibition titled "Women's Re/-Evolution. A Change of Roles" will be on at the Vaska Emanouilova Gallery in Sofia between April 30 and June 20, the organizers said.
The exhibition includes 22 works by Bulgarian artists from the holdings of the Sofia City Art Gallery, including Aneta Dragusanu, Boryana Rossa and Oleg Mavromatti, Mariela Gemisheva, Sevda Chkutova, Vaska Emanuilova.
The event is curated by Galina Dekova and Galina Dimitrova.
The selection presents the way the female image is depicted in Bulgarian art from the second half of the 20th century until the present and highlights atypical roles, such as its ideological use in art after 1950. At the same time, it shows women as artists and illustrates the reversal of the traditional positions of males as artists and females as sitters, the Gallery's team says.
As a result of active work with Vaska Emanouilova's biography, the exhibition presents the socialist woman as a actively involved in the socio-political processes of the second half of the 20th century and focuses on the handling of the female image by both male and female artists in its anti-erotic and anti-aesthetic aspect.
