site.btaUPDATED Nearly 403 Kg of Heroin Seized at Turkish-Bulgarian Border
Heroin worth more than BGN 16.7 million was seized at the Kapitan Andreevo border control check point, the press centres of the Ministry of Finance and the Prosecution service reported on Saturday. The illegal drug weighing at 402,72 kg was hidden in 156 sleeping mattresses, which were being shipped in a truck with Turkish licence plates driven by a Turkish national.
The heroin was discovered after an X-ray examination of the vehicle. The customs in Svilengrad reported that this has been the largest amount of heroin seized at the border crossing since 2019.
Later Saturday, caretaker Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov told a press conference that the investigation is in its early stages, as there is still a lot of work to be done in cooperation with other countries. All channels have been activated to obtain information from the countries through which the truck passed.
The vehicle was travelling from Iran to the European Union. The 63-year-old driver has been detained for 72 hours. An investigation into the case is in progress.
