The Haskovo District Court Friday sentenced a Dutch national to two years in prison for smuggling drugs through the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkiye and for driving under the influence of drugs. The man was also fined BGN 50,000, the Haskovo Court House said.

The sentence was reached through an agreement between the Dutch man’s defence and the prosecution service, which was approved by the court.

The Kapitan Andreevo case dates back to August 1, 2023, when Border Police officers carried out a thorough check of a vehicle with two Dutchmen on board entering Bulgaria from Turkiye. The officers found cocaine and marijuana worth a total of BGN 130,700 in the hollow spaces of the two rear doors. A drug test showed that the driver had taken cocaine before getting behind the wheel. The court then left the man identified as a drug trafficker in custody.

Friday’s ruling of the court is final and unappealable, the Haskovo Court House said.
