site.btaSofia University Commemorates Spanish Writer Javier Marias with Roundtable
A roundtable in memory of Spanish writer Javier Marias (1951-2022) was held at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, the University reported on Thursday. The forum was organized by Sofia University's Department of Hispanic Studies and by Instituto Cervantes in Sofia.
Marias, considered to be the greatest contemporary Spanish writer, is the author of 16 novels, short stories, essays and articles. From the 1970s onwards, he translated English literary works into Spanish.
The forum, which took place in Spanish, was opened by Assoc. Prof. Donka Mangacheva, Head of the Department of Hispanic Studies, and by Maria Luisa Santos, Director of the Instituto Cervantes in Sofia. A participant in the event was journalist Juan Cruz, who was also Marias's first publisher and long-time friend. In his speech, Cruz spoke about Marias's curiosity about the world, about his attitude of a storyteller and his strive to polish his texts to perfection.
