The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) discovered an outbreak of Influenza A (flu) in a poultry farm in the town of Asenovgrad, Plovdiv region. About 154,000 birds were bred at the site, the BFSA said on Wednesday.
A 3-kilometre safety zone has been defined around the affected livestock facility, which includes the following settlements in the Plovdiv region: Asenovgrad Municipality (Asenovgrad and Boyantsi); Sadovo Municipality (Mominsko).
A 10-kilometre area that will be monitored includes: Rhodopes Municipality (Krumovo, Yagodovo); Sadovo Municipality (Sadovo, Bolyartsi, Katunitsa, Karadjovo, Kochevo); Kuklen Municipality (Kuklen, Ruen); Asenovgrad Municipality (Izbeglii, Kozanovo, Stoevo, Zlatovrakh, Muldava and Lyaskovo).
In order to limit the disease and prevent its spread, actions will be taken to humanely kill the infected and contact birds on the site.
The BFSA recalls that poultry meat and products harvested in a site where an outbreak of avian influenza has been established do not pose a danger to human health.
