A photo exhibition titled The Living World of the Maritsa River opened here on Monday at the Haskovo Regional Administration, said Haskovo town hall. The exhibition is dedicated to April 1 - International Bird Day and was visited by Maria Valcheva, Deputy Mayor of Haskovo. The author of the photographs is Bogdan Boev.
Mariyana Valcheva, Director of the Haskovo Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate said that being a photographer of wildlife is extremely difficult, adding that Bogdan Boev is one of the best in this field. She stressed that the diversity of birds is huge in Haskovo and the region .
At the end of March, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds reported the first little curled pelicans that hatched in the Kalimok-Brushlen Protected Area. The organization also published a video of the happy moment, made by environmentalist photographer Damyan Petkov. Petkov has been involved with wildlife photography for several years. He says that his favourite thing is not only to photograph birds, but to listen to their song. He noted the concept of ornitotherapy as an opportunity for a person to indulge in a break from their daily cares.

The decision to declare April 1 a special date was made on December 6, 1906 under the Convention for the Protection of Birds. In Bulgaria, the day has been observed since 1988. "This is one of the first environmental dates in the international calendar of global events, through which people express their concern for the protection and preservation of the wild nature of the planet," said the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds on their Facebook page.
