The Council of Ministers here Wednesday approved the Report on the State of Defence and the Armed Forces in 2023. The report, which contains an account of the achievements in terms of defence policy in 2023 and is part of the democratic and civilian scrutiny of the Armed Forces, will be submitted to the National Assembly for consideration.
Given the serious security and collective defence challenges since Russia's war against Ukraine, NATO is setting higher demands on capabilities. This is particularly true for member states on the Eastern Flank.
Defence efforts were focused mainly on improving the conditions for the fulfilment of the Armed Forces' missions and tasks, accelerating the development and maintenance of the required defence capabilities and filling their shortfall, implementing the NATO Capability Goals, rearmament and modernization, further building NATO's forward presence, filling vacant positions in the Armed Forces, manning and training the voluntary reserve. A Strategic Defence Policy Review was launched to streamline governance processes in the context of the implementation of Agenda 2032.
