In 2022, the life expectancy at birth in the European Union is rising compared to pre-pandemic years. However, it remains below the 2019 level, according to latest Eurostat data released on Thursday.
The average life expectancy of children born in the EU in 2022 is expected to be 80.6 years. This represents an increase compared to 2021 (80.1 years) and 2020 (80.4 years).
The life expectancy of children born in Bulgaria (74.2 years) is the lowest among all EU Member States. This country is preceded by Latvia (74.5 years) and Romania (75.1 years).
The EU Member State with the highest life expectancy at birth was Spain (83.2 years), followed by Sweden (83.1 years) and Luxembourg (83 years).
Three regions in Bulgaria had the lowest life expectancy at birth among EU regions: North-Western (72.3 years), North-Central (73.2 years), and South-Eastern (73.7 years).
The EU region with the highest life expectancy at birth was the Spanish region of Comunidad de Madrid (85.2 years), followed by Italy’s Provincia Autonoma di Trento (84.4 years), and France’s Ile de France (84.1 years).
