A new Bulgarian Orthodox church was consecrated in Stuttgart, the capital of the German province of Baden-Wurttemberg, on March 10. The former Catholic Church of St. Boniface became a Bulgarian church named after St. St. Cyril and Methodius, the Bulgarian Embassy in Germany said on its Facebook page. Bulgarian Ambassador to Berlin Grigor Porozhanov was a special guest at the event.
Previously owned by the Catholic Church, the Church of St. Boniface was rented by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church community for the past six years.
Metropolitan Anthony of Western and Central Europe and Monsignor Christian Hermes of the Diocese of Rothenburg - Stuttgart have signed a contract for the sale and purchase of the church on 20 June 2023. The entire property is 1,265 sq m, including the church, a parish house, and a hall.
Metropolitan Anthony officiated at the consecration service together with Metropolitan Nikolai of Plovdiv.
The Embassy of Bulgaria in Berlin took the opportunity to congratulate the Bulgarians in the Stuttgart region and Germany on the event and expressed hope that the church would become a center of Bulgarian culture and traditions. "The Bulgarian government continues to support the spiritual and social life of our compatriots in Germany and one example of that is the acquisition of the St. Boniface Church in Stuttgart," the Embassy added.
