Customs officers at the Kaptain Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkiye have seized close to four times more golden jewelry in the first two months of 2024, compared to the same period of last year, the Customs Agency said. Last year, more than 106 kg of gold and silver pieces were seized at the checkpoint. Illegal trafficking of precious metals is almost always in the direction from Turkiye to Bulgaria or Western Europe.

In the latest case, Kapitan Andreevo customs officers seized 2,910.20 grams of smuggled gold jewelry worth a total of BGN 285,336. The jewelry was found hidden on a bus on its way from Turkiye to Romania via Bulgaria.

A Turkish citizen 35 has been charged in the case, the prosecution service reported. He has been released on a BGN 4,000 bail and banned from leaving the country.
