Bulgaria’s National Day was marked in Japan on Sunday with a festival titled Martenitsa 2024, organized by the Bulgarian Embassy in Tokyo and the Shibuya Municipality.

The event was held for the second consecutive year in the state-of-the-art Miyashita Park located in downtown Tokyo, near the Shibuya Crossing, and also celebrated the Japanese Hinamatsuri, or Girls' Day.

The festival was opened by Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Japan Marieta Arabadjieva and Shibuya City Mayor Ken Hasebe. The event’s programme included performances by Bulgarian musician Yordan Markov and the Japanese folk company Koga, which has been presenting Bulgarian dances and music in Japan for almost 40 years.

Embassy representatives presented hundreds of guests with martenitsas (spring amulets Bulgarians exchange on March 1) and told them about the Bulgarian holiday traditions.

A wide range of traditional Bulgarian products were presented at the festival, including wine, yogurt, cheese, Bulgarian rose-based products, rose jam, honey, herbal teas, and pottery, among others, many of which were sold out within the first few hours.

Attended by thousands of Japanese, foreign tourists, and Bulgarians living in Japan, the event was covered by the Japanese J-WAVE radio and filmed by Fuji TV as part of a two-part documentary series dedicated to Bulgaria and its culture.
