A seminar to improve disaster risk understanding and management was held here on Wednesday. The event was organised jointly by the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Japanese Government. Participating were representatives of all Eastern and Western Balkan countries.

Opening the event, Deputy Interior Minister Kiril Tsenkin said that building a sustainable disaster risk management system that meets public needs is among Bulgaria's top priorities. Tsenkin added that the significant increase in natural disasters in recent years raises the need for the intervention of the government, local authorities, businesses and non-governmental organisations.

"The workshop will provide an opportunity to share best practices and norms to improve our disaster management skills. I am also confident that the contacts established will be a good basis for future joint initiatives and strengthening our cooperation and solidarity," Tsenkin said.

Deputy Foreign Minister Elena Shekerletova said that Bulgaria and Japan have a rich history of traditionally friendly relations and active exchanges. Аs like-minded partners who share common values and goals, it is natural for Bulgaria and Japan to grow and expand their cooperation, added she.

Ambassador of Japan to Bulgaria Hisashi Michigami explained how his country has managed to build cooperation between the central and local government, the community, citizens, business and academic circles. He added that thanks to science, technology and school education, today they have many experts in disaster risk education. He asked for feedback and advice after the workshop from all participants on how to develop their relations in the future.
