Two individuals on Tuesday carried out an armed attack on a police checkpoint in front of the Palace of Justice in Istanbul's Caglayan neighbourhood. Six people were wounded in the attack and the two attackers were killed by security guards. This was announced by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, quoted by Turkish NTV television.
Three of the six wounded were police officers. The condition of one of the injured is serious.
Many police teams and ambulances have been dispatched to the scene. The entrances and exits of the court have been closed.
Yerlikaya pointed out that the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) terrorist group was behind the attack, CNN-Turk television reported.
The neutralized assailants with the initials E. Y. and P. B. are members of the terrorist group DHKP/C, Yerlikaya said.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said the Istanbul Prosecutor General's Office had ordered an investigation.
In the shooting, people around the court and inside the building panicked and lay on the ground.
The specific motives of the attackers are not yet known.
The DHKP/C is listed as a terrorist group by Turkiye and the United States. The group preaches Marxist ideology and has been behind a number of attacks on government facilities in recent years.
