Cellist Marin Cazacu and the Violoncellissimo Ensemble will stage an extraordinary concert at Sofia's Bulgaria Hall on February 11, the Sofia Philharmonic said on Monday.

The programme, entitled "From Baroque to … Rock," features selected tunes from popular films, waltzes, marches and other works in a rock version by composers including Albinoni, Handel, Bizet, Piazzolla, Offenbach, Freddie Mercury, Saint Saens and Mozart.

Prof. Marin Cazacu initiated the Violoncellissimo project more than 30 years ago. The idea was to bring people of any background closer to music of all genres. In 2024 the maestro and his ensemble are planning to reach the largest possible number of communities, including the Romanian diaspora, in a series of tours.

Violoncellissimo comprises Romania's best young cellists and is among the best known chamber ensembles in that country in recent decades, the Sofia Philharmonic said.
