Local members of the Moldovan Writers’ Union gathered at the BTA Press Club in Taraclia to congratulate its chair Nikolay Kurtev, a Bessarabian Bulgarian well-known in Bulgaria and Moldova, who turned 77. The event took place within a working meeting of writers which outlined the achievements of the outgoing year and discussed upcoming activities such as meetings with writers from Gagauzia and Bulgaria.

„During the outgoing year our members published several books on different themes and in different genres. We write mainly in Bulgarian. We popularize Bulgarian literature and want local people to master better their mother tongue in order to teach our traditions and customs to their children and grandchildren. This is the direction that we are working in,” said Kurtev.

His colleagues noted his contribution to Bessarabian literature and the development of the Bulgarian community in Moldova.

Representatives of regional and local administrations came to congratulate Kurtev as well.

Kurtev was born on January 25 1947 in the village of Valea Perjei. He graduated in Russian studies in Tiraspol and received a PhD degree from the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, according to meridian27.

He is the author and co-author of the books “On This Day in Bessarabia”, “The Devil’s Laughter”, etc.
