The Bulgarian gas transmission operator Bulgartransgaz announced Thursday that it has signed an operational interconnection agreement for the Strandzha/Malkoclar interconnector with Turkish gas transmission system operator BOTAŞ. The agreement specifies the technical conditions, including the minimum transmission pressure and natural gas quality characteristics, as well as the applicable procedures on both sides of Strandzha/Malkoclar.

The company says that the agreement is a result of the long-term joint efforts of both operators’ teams.

The technical capacity of Strandzha/Malkoclar in Turkey-Bulgaria direction in the Bulgartransgaz gas transmission network is set at 117,677,153 kWh/d, and in the reverse direction at 504,138,541 kWh/d.

The conclusion of an interconnection agreement is of key importance for the diversification of natural gas sources not only for Bulgaria, but also for the regional and European gas markets. Via Turkey's gas transmission network, access is provided to natural gas from local fields, Azerbaijan, Iran and the global LNG market through Turkey's regasification terminals. The signature of this interconnection agreement strengthens the leading role of the Bulgarian gas transmission operator in achieving market integration, diversification and security of natural gas supplies in the region and in Europe.
