Bad weather has delayed from Thursday to Friday the launch of the first flight of a Turkish astronaut, Alper Gezeravci, to the International Space Station, a source of the Turkish Industry and Technology Ministry told BTA. The reason for the delay was strong wind.

This has been the second delay. The private spaceflight Axion Mission 3 was initially scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 9 and then on January 18.

The launch ceremony will be viewable from specially installed planetariums in the capital Ankara and in Istanbul. Gezeravci's entire flight will be followed by space engineers and scientists working at the ground station of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye.

Turkiye's national space programme was announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2021.
