Colombian cellist Santiago Canon-Valencia will hold his first concert in Sofia on December 14, the Sofia Philharmonic said.
The conductor will be Cristian Mandeal, who will present Cello Concerto No. 1 by Camille Saint-Saëns. The concert's programme also includes an overture of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser and George Enescu’s Symphony No. 1.
Santiago Canon-Valencia was born in Bogotá in 1995 and made his orchestral debut as a soloist at the age of six with the Orquesta Filarmonica de Bogota. He is a silver medalist and Audience Favorite at the 2019 XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition, the recipient of the 2018 Starker Foundation Award, Third Prize honoree at the 2017 Queen Elisabeth International Competition, among others.
During his career, Canon-Valencia has performed with the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra with Christoph Eschenbach, the Brussels Philharmonic with Stephane Deneve, SWR Symphonieorchester with Andris Poga, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra with Nikolai Alexeev, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra with Muhai Tang, Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra with Yuri Bashmet, etc.
