Commenting on Bulgaria's recent measure to impose a fee on the import and transit of Russian gas, a spokesperson for the European Commission (EC) confirmed on Monday that the EC has been informed of the measure. The Commission is in close contact with Bulgaria and all other affected countries in order to discuss the possible effects of the measure.

On the matter of where the revenues from this fee will be directed, the spokesperson pointed out that this is a national measure, which is why the decision is up to the Bulgarian authorities.

He said: "In terms of EU-sanctions policy [...], EU sanctions are agreed unanimously by the 27 Member States," and added that for the time being, there are 12 sanctions packages that cover coal and oil imports from Russia but not gas. The spokesperson reiterated that the EU is committed to reducing its imports of all Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible.
