Bulgaria has the right to impose a fee on the import and transit of Russian gas, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said in Tirana on Monday, as quoted by the Government Information Service. He was commenting on the fee of BGN 20 per MWh (approximately 100 cubic metres of Russian natural gas entering and transiting the country) imposed by the National Assembly and in effect as of October 13.

Despite the sanctions against Russia, some countries - like Hungary and Serbia - have been permitted to import Russian gas due to lack of other options, Denkov explained. However, there already are interconnectors, so there are alternatives and the Russian gas should not be used with some special preferences, he added.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister is in Albania for a Berlin Process Summit of heads of State and government focused on the integration between the six Western Balkan countries on their common path to the EU. "The negotiations with the EU are difficult for many reasons, but that does not prevent the countries to integrate among themselves in terms of trade, movement of goods, capitals, and people. That prepares them for their integration in the European Union," Denkov commented. The Summit discussed ways to accelerate these processes between the countries in the Western Balkans and in relation to their EU accession negotiations, the Government Information Service reported.
