At the end of a two-day meeting of the European Council in Brussels, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov commented to Bulgarian journalists on the expressed doubts about the functioning of voting machines on the eve of Sunday's upcoming local elections.

"At present, the machines work as printers, so it is clear that no one can be deceived in this way, because they see what the machine prints as a bulletin," Denkov said.

The whole situation is being used to once again question machine voting, the Prime Minister commented. "It is obvious that the opposition wants very much to use the situation as a new occasion to topple the government. We know that GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms have wanted to remove the machines for a long time, for them this might be a convenient way to make it happen," he added.

The decision on the vote must rests with the Central Election Commission (CEC), said Denkov. The code is password-protected by three CEC members. "Without CEC, nothing can be changed on the machines. That is why I say that there is a lot of noise, but little substance in the presented accusations," added Denkov. "Politicians in the National Assembly must decide whether they want us to continue along the path we have been on so far," he said.
