Bulgarian Land Forces personnel are beginning to repair the fence along the border with Turkiye and the adjoining road, the Defence Ministry reported on Thursday.

A crew of 20 servicepersons and 10 vehicles from 55th Belene Engineer Regiment will be contributing to the implementation of a joint plan of the Ministries of Interior and of Defence for urgent repair work along the national border.

The crew will carry out daily reconstruction activities on the fence and the road until December 31. The necessary materials, tools and equipment have been provided by the Border Police on unused funding from the 2022 budget of the Interior Ministry.

On October 11, the Council of Ministers tasked the ministers of interior and defence with the procurement, leadership and oversight of urgent repair of the fence along Bulgaria's border with Turkiye and the adjoining road until the end of the year. The cabinet also approved BGN 5 million in additional expenditures to the Interior Ministry budget for 2023 to finance the management of the fence.
