Preliminary contracts have been signed for the addition of some 15,000 MW of new renewable energy capacity, Electricity System Operator (ESO) Executive Director Angelin Tsachev said here Thursday during the forum "Industrial Triathlon: Climate, Energy, Environment", organized by the Bulgarian Federation of Industrial Energy Consumers. He pointed out that this means that 7000-8000 MWh of new RES sources are likely to be reached.
Tsachev recalled that since the beginning of the year more than 1,700 MWh of RES sources have been connected to the ESO grid, with another 200-300 MWh expected by the end of the year. He noted that as of October 1, renewable energy constituted more than 25.50% of Bulgaria’s energy mix, with 12% coming from solar plants.
In terms of wind energy there is some delay, Tsachev added, explaining that this is mostly due to environmental requirements. He said that there is a declared interest in connecting more than 7,000 MWh of wind capacity, but preliminary contracts have been signed for only 500 MW. However, he expressed belief that Bulgaria does not have much potential for wind power generation.
