Bulgaria’s tie with Kazakhstan in the Davis Cup World Group I will be played on September 16-17 at the courts of the National UBB Tennis Centre in the Borisova Gradina park in Sofia.
The competition will begin with a match between Bulgaria’s number 1 player Dimitar Kuzmanov, who is 179th in the singles ranking, and Kazakhstan's number 2 player, Timofey Skatov, ranked at No. 123. The second singles match on Saturday will be played between Yanaki Milev (No. 569) and Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik (No. 29).
Sunday's programme will start with a doubles match, which will feature Bulgarian duo Alexander Lazarov and Alexander Donski against Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Nedovyesov and Andrey Golubev.
The first competition day is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. and the second one at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free until the capacity limit of 900 seats of the tennis centre court is reached.
In February 2024, the winner will participate in the qualifications for the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals - the pinnacle of the competition where the best 16 teams in the world meet. The loser will have to defend its place in World Group I in a playoff against a team from World Group II.
On February 5, Bulgaria qualified for World Group I for the first time since the format changes of the competition, winning against New Zealand in the qualifier. The last time the Bulgarian national team was part of the second tier of Davis Cup was in 1988 when it was called Group I.
