Romania is taking protection measures on its territory which is in immediate proximity to the warzone in Ukraine, Romania's National Committee for Special Emergency Situations announced at a meeting Friday.

A press release sent to BTA Friday reads: "The decision is prompted by the latest events and current geopolitical context determined by the war, which is caused by the Russian aggression in Ukraine generating repeated recent Russian attacks targeting the Ukrainian ports of Reni and Ismail, both of which are in immediate proximity to the Romanian border."

The Romanian National Defence Ministry will assess and establish the areas on the territory of Romania adjacent to the Reni and Ismail conflict zones. District emergency situation committees will inform the population which areas can be used for shelter and asylum accommodation if needed, and the district emergency inspectorates will put out guidelines for citizens in case of an emergency.

The National Defence Ministry will also build shelters for the population in Plauru and Ceatalchioi, and settlements with very few inhabitants.

The population in the areas close to the Ukraine conflict will be alerted of any risk through the Ro-Alert system and/or a similar system. In areas where GSM coverage is temporarily unavailable, teams will be dispatched to warn the population of the potential danger.
