Students from the Besarabian Bulgarian Orikhivka village, Bolhrad Region,Ukraine, recently visit Germany. The boys train football at their local school, the Aleksandar Malinov Lyceum.

"During the 2022/23 school year, the junior football team was supported by Olympic football champion Volodymyr Lyutyi and the Wubel family who live in Germany. Thanks to our compatriot Sergey Ivanov, our benefactors learned about the football team, the students, and the difficulties they face, as well as the success they have achieved. The coach of the German football club Hansa Lyutyi, together with the Wubel family, supported our football players by sending them new leather balls and football uniform sets", the lyceum said.

The lyceum student team and their coach, Vitalyi Hristov, were recent guests of German Hansa Rostok team. The young Bulgarians from Besarabia had matches with the youth teams of the German club, and joint training sessions.

Orikhivka village was founded by Bulgarian settlers in 1830. Until 1945 the village bore the name of Pandaklyi, after which it was renamed during the Soviet era. It was there that Bulgarian politician and prime minister Aleksandar Malinov was born in 1867.

According to official data, today Orikhivka has 2,400 residents 95% of whom are Bulgarians. The local general school was named after Aleksandar Malinov in 2020.
