The first lithium-ion batteries will be recycled in Bulgaria under a pilot project within months. So far they have been in small quantities and have been periodically exported to European countries for safe disposal and reuse.

"At the moment, we are achieving very effective national coverage in terms of portable batteries and electronic equipment", said Alexander Yavriyski, CEO of Ecobattery AD. By law, a minimum of 45% of portable batteries must be collected - a goal that has been met and exceeded in Bulgaria for the past ten years.

Higher targets are yet to be set and addressed, however - the Council of the European Union recently announced that it had approved new rules for the production, processing and sale of batteries. By 2030, their manufacturers are to buy back 73% of their products.

According to Yavriyski, the conditions are in place to increase the recycled quantities, but first of all it depends on each individual consumer.
