UNICEF Representative to Bulgaria Christina de Bruin on Tuesday welcomed recent amendments to the country's Protection from Domestic Violence Act, noting that they were a very important beginning of legislative reforms in this field, the Justice Ministry reported.

De Bruin met with Justice Minister Atanas Slavov, who said that the amendments came after heated debates in two successive parliaments. They are aimed to ensure fast and efficient protection of domestic violence victims, including children, Slavov said. According to de Bruin, there is a very close link between violence against women and violence against children.

The Justice Minister said that more initiatives related to child protection and juvenile justice are coming up.

The sides discussed access to justice for members of vulnerable groups, particularly persons under judicial disability. They stated their shared intention to continue and deepen the successful cooperation between UNICEF and the Justice Ministry at the expert level and under legislative and practical initiatives.
