Several people were injured in the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that hit the southern Turkish Kozan district of Adana Tuesday morning, the TRT-Haber state TV said.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said the quake was epicentred in the Kozan district of Adana province at a depth of 11.27 km.

The earthquake caused panic in the city centre and surrounding districts. Citizens rushed out in the streets. Cracks on buildings were established, but no other material damage so far. Authorities are continuing their inspection.

Ceyhan District Governor Bayram Yilmaz told the media that some people had been injured because they had panicked and jumped from windows or terraces. No negative reports have been received in Kozan and Ceyhan so far either.

After the 5.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred at 08:44, 11 more aftershocks occurred, the largest of which was 3.2. The quake was said to be felt in nearby Diyarbakir and Mersin provinces.

The earthquake in Adana comes some five and half months after a pair of devastating quakes that impacted vast swathes of the country's southeastern region and left at least 50,000 people dead.
