The Ministry's policy is aimed at ensuring the sustainable development of the transport sector in accordance with the principles of security, safety, energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. The team has started active work to accelerate all transport projects that are linked to achieving the European Union's green and digital transition objectives, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Dimitar Nedyalkov said, addressing the participants in a round table on the need for joint action of politicians and scientists for decarbonisation and smart solutions in the field of transport, organised by the Angel Kanchev University of Ruse Monday.

The budget of the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021-2027 is BGN 3.718 billion, Nedyalkov pointed out. The funds will be used mainly for the development of rail and road infrastructure on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the implementation of intelligent transport systems, the promotion of intermodality, and the construction of infrastructure for alternative fuels.

The programme provides EUR 40 million for the construction of 160 charging stations for alternative fuels on the national road network and 4 in public transport ports of national importance. "This will contribute to promoting energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment and the climate," the Deputy Transport Minister said.

Under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, investments have been planned for the purchase of seven double-deckers and 35 single-deckers, 20 push-pull trainsets and 18 shunting locomotives, and the supply of on-board equipment for 108 electric locomotives and multiple units. "In the procurement of the rolling stock, we found that several significant omissions have been made. In order to avoid the risks they entail and to extend the opportunity for greater competition, the respective procurements were suspended. We are currently working on eliminating these shortcomings and we plan to restart the procurement by the end of this month," Deputy Minister Dimitar Nedyalkov said. He added that the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS Level 2) will be implemented in the Ruse - Kaspichan railway section with the funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan. An Intermodal Terminal in Ruse is also planned to be built under the plan by mid-2026. The public procurement has already been launched and a contractor is expected to be selected by September. The indicative cost of the project is BGN 54 million.
