Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 44,459.2 million (49.2% of GDP) at end-April 2023, growing by EUR 3,191.4 million (7.7%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 41,267.8 million, 48.8% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank said Friday.

Short-term liabilities equalled EUR 7,707.7 million (17.3% of the total debt, 8.5% of GDP), growing by EUR 88.7 million (1.2%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 7,619.1 million, 18.5% of the total debt, 9% of GDP). 

Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 36,751.5 million (82.7% of the total debt, 40.7% of GDP) at end-April 2023, growing by EUR 3,102.8 million (9.2%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 33,648.7 million, 81.5% of the total debt, 39.8% of GDP).

Gross external liabilities with remaining maturity over one year totalled EUR 26,996 million (60.7%) in April 2023. At end-April 2023, 79.8% of gross external liabilities were denominated in euros, compared with 78.7% at end-April 2022. 

 General government’s gross external debt totalled EUR 9,568.6 million (10.6% of GDP), growing by EUR 2,223.8 million (30.3%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 7,344.8 million, 8.7% of GDP). 

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 1,989.5 million (2.2% of GDP), decreasing by EUR 61 million (3%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 2,050.5 million, 2.4% of GDP). 

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions totalled EUR 5,978.4 million (6.6% of GDP), increasing by EUR 809 million (15.7%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 5,169.4 million, 6.1% of GDP). 

Other sectors’ external debt equalled EUR 12,168.3 million (13.5% of GDP), decreasing by EUR 537.1 million (4.2%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 12,705.4 million, 15% of GDP). 

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 14,754.4 million (16.3% of GDP) at end-April 2023, growing by EUR 756.7 million (5.4%) from end-April 2022 (EUR 13,997.7 million, 16.6% of GDP). It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 33.2% at end-April 2023, compared with 33.9% at end-April 2022.
