Parliament extended Friday the period for nomination of candidates for the position of Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) governor from the initial seven to 14 days. The revision to the resolution passed earlier in the day on the rules of the conditions and procedure for nominating candidates for governor of the BNB, as well as the procedure for election by the National Assembly, was passed with 128 votes in favour, 1 against and 12 abstained.

The motion to extend the candidate nomination period was made by Boyko Borissov and Dessislava Atanassova of GERB-UDF and was included in the agenda at the proposal of Parliament Chair Rossen Zhelyazkov. The idea is to give the nominees more time to prepare the required documents to apply, the sponsors argued.

Earlier in the day, Parliament agreed that proposals for candidates for BNB governor would be made by the parliamentary groups within seven days of the adoption of these procedural rules by the National Assembly. The MPs of Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria did not take part in the first or the second vote as they decided to not enter the plenary all day earlier Friday.
