New Car Registrations in EU Increase by 18.5% Y/Y in May; 2,760 New Cars Registered in Bulgaria

The new car market in the European Union continued to grow in May. Last month, 938,950 new cars were registered, an increase of 18.5% compared to May 2022, show figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) released on Wednesday in Brussels.

New car sales increased on an annual basis for the tenth consecutive month. Significant growth was recorded in the EU's leading car markets - Spain (+26.9%), Italy (+23.1%), Germany (+19.2%) and France (+14.8%), ACEA noted.

In Bulgaria, 2,760 new cars were registered in May, an increase compared to the same month in 2022 (2,690 new cars), ACEA data show. 

In April this year, the number of newly registered cars in Bulgaria was 2,838.

The share of new all-electric vehicles registered in the EU increased in May this year to 13.8% of all new registrations, (9.6% in May 2022).

The share of new cars with petrol engines in the EU in May was 36.5%, those with diesel engines were 14.3% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) were 25%.

In Bulgaria, the share of newly registered electric vehicles in May was 4.2%. Most new cars were petrol-powered at 73.3%, followed by diesel-powered at 20.1% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) at 1.8%.
