site.btaAnnual Household Income per Household Member Grows 1.9-Fold in 10 Years, Expenditures Rise 1.8-Fold

April 15 (BTA) - Total annual household income per household member in Bulgaria in 2020 was 7,002 leva, increasing by 6.2 per cent compared with 2019, the National Statistical Institute reported on Thursday. In 10 years, from 2011 to 2020, total annual household income per household member grew 1.9-fold.

In 2020, household expenditures per household member amounted to 6,220 leva, almost unchanged from 2019. Between 2011 and 2020, household expenditures per household member increased 1.8-fold.

Real household income (i.e. nominal income adjusted for inflation) went up by 4.4 per cent in 2020 compared with 2019. Real household income in 2020 was 165.9 per cent of the 2011 level.

Annual wage income per household member stood at 3,927 leva in 2020, growing by 5.3 per cent from 2019 and twofold from 2011. Annual pension income per household member amounted to 2,018 leva in 2020, going up by 12 per cent compared with 2019 and 77 per cent compared with 2011. Annual income from self-employment in 2020 was 434 leva per-household-member, going up by 3.1 per cent from 2019 and 50.7 per cent from 2011. Annual non-wage income from employment in 2020 was 46 leva per household member, dropping by 17.9 per cent compared with 2019 and 8 per cent compared with 2011. Annual income from other welfare transfers (unemployment benefits, family supplements for children etc.) in 2020 was 204 leva per household member, growing by 5.2 per cent compared with 2019 and 63.2 per cent compared with 2011.

Wages accounted for the largest share of total household income in 2020, at 56.1 per cent, decreasing by 0.5 percentage points compared with 2019 and 4.3 percentage points compared with 2011. Income from all welfare transfers (pensions, unemployment benefits, family supplements for children etc.) was 31.8 per cent of total household income in 2020. Among all types of welfare transfers, pensions held the largest share of total household income, at 28.8 per cent, rising by 1.5 percentage points from 2019 and falling by 1.3 percentage points compared with 2011. Income from self-employment made up 6.2 per cent of total household income in 2020, going down by 0.2 percentage points compared with 2019 and 1.4 percentage points compared with 2011.
