The options for cooperation in the field of climate diplomacy and environmental protection were discussed by President Rumen Radev and Environment and Water Minister Borislav Sandov here on Wednesday, the head of State's press secretariat said.

In Radev's words, in the area of ecology, Bulgarian citizens expect cleaner air, protection of biodiversity, no more barbaric felling in forests and water pollution, and conservation of Bulgaria's nature. Thus far only fictitious environmental policies have been conducted, he argued and outlined as a challenge the handling of the European Commission's infringement procedures against Bulgaria in the environment sector.

Radev and Minister Sandov shared the position that economic development should be achieved with care for the environment and protection of natural resources. Environmental protection is already a priority in EU policies, the head of State noted.

Radev and Sandov discussed the mechanisms for building green economy and achieving a reasonable balance in the course of this transition.  "You can rely on my support in your efforts to find sustainable solutions to the benefit of Bulgarian society," the President said.

The sides also discussed options for fighting climate change, including the restoration and conservation of forest territories. Radev mentioned as a successful example of environmental protection in Bulgaria the presidential initiative "Let's Plant a Tree, Let's Revive the Bulgarian Forest", launched in April 2021.
