site.btaProsecutors Terminate Investigation into Borissov-Tanov Case

Sofia, August 18 (BTA) - The Sofia City Prosecution Office said on Monday it has terminated an investigation into leaked conversations between former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the then Customs Agency Director Vanyo Tanov. The investigation, which was being conducted against an unknown perpetrator, was dropped after the authorities found no evidence of a legal offence.

The authenticity of the leaked recordings was not confirmed by an expanded examination.

The alleged conversations, leaked by a tabloid early in 2011, were said to have involved Tanov, in his capacity as Customs Agency Director, and senior government officials. One of the transcripts showed Prime Minister Borissov ordering Tanov to abandon a check of an excise-duty-evading brewery owned by the now-deceased businessman Mihail Mihov, because the Prime Minister had "promised not to touch him."

The investigation was terminated at the end of last month.
