The National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) will open its first branch outside of Sofia, in Burgas, Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said on his official Facebook page on Wednesday.

"This is a historic moment not only for Burgas, but also for NATFA!", Nikolov emphasized, thanking the cultural community that supported the idea and its implementation.

At the end of February 2025, the Burgas Municipal Council approved a proposal for the municipality to provide premises for the administrative and educational activities of a branch of NATFA. The halls and offices that will be provided for the branch are located in the NHK Cultural Centre and the Youth Cultural Centre in the seaside city. The proposal is to provide them free of charge for a period of ten years for shared use.

At the end of June 2025, the Burgas Municipal Council also approved the proposal to open the first branch of the National Music Academy in Burgas as well. During the vote, Mayor Dimitar Nikolov specified that the procedures should be finalized in July this year.

Several branches of higher education institutions from Sofia have opened branches in Burgas in the last several years, including the National Academy of Arts and Sofia University.
