with Most Victims of
Human Trafficking


Brussels, October 17 (BTA correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - The
top five countries of citizenship within the EU, in terms of
absolute numbers of registered victims of human trafficking in
2010-2012, were Romania, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Hungary and
Poland, the European Commission found in a Mid-term report on
the implementation of the EU strategy towards the eradication of
trafficking in human beings, which was released here on Friday.

For non-EU citizens, the top five countries were Nigeria,
Brazil, China, Viet Nam and
Russia.

The top five EU countries of traffickers' citizenship were
Bulgaria, Romania, Belgium, Germany, and Spain. In relation to
non-EU citizenship (31 per cent), the five countries most
frequently reported in the three reference years were Nigeria,
Turkey, Albania, Brazil and Morocco.

Member States reported that 8,551 people were prosecuted for
trafficking in human beings over the three years 2010-2012.
There were 3,786 convictions reported over the same period.

Over the three-year period, 30,146 victims were registered in
the 28 Member States. According to data disaggregated by gender,
during the reference period 80 per cent of registered victims
were female.

Registered victims of sexual exploitation are predominantly
female (95 per cent), whereas the majority of registered victims
of labour exploitation are male (71 per cent). LI/LG
