Border Police Director Penov  Resigns

Sofia, December 29 (BTA) - Border Police Director Zaharin Penov
has tendered his resignation, which was accepted by Interior
Minister Vesselin Vouchkov, the Vouchkov said during a news
conference Monday after meeting with the leaders of his
Ministry's trade unions. Penov tendered his resignation on
Saturday on moral grounds over the death of police officer Assen
Assenov.

On December 26, a ZIL-131 off-road truck carrying 15 Interior
Ministry employees capsized in a 4-metre-deep gully near the
Village of Gorno Yabulkovo, Sredets Municipality (Southeastern
Bulgaria). Assenov was the truck's driver and was killed in the
accident. The Interior Ministry employees were on their way
back from a specialized police operation on Bulgaria's border
with Turkey.

Minister Vouchkov said that the Interior Ministry will propose
to Cabinet a new form of border protection, because the current
one is exhausted. According to him, deploying police officers
from the country's interior to the border generates huge
problems. Vouchkov said that the officers are not prepared and
their deployment exposes the country's interior.

The Interior Ministry will work according to a plan, which
provides for the construction of an additional fence along the
border, the roads along the riskiest sections and improving the
equipment. PK/MY
