Controlled Release of Ten Dams Is in Progress after the Recent Rains, Environment Minister Says

Varna, on the Black Sea, February 3 (BTA) - The controlled
release of ten dams in Bulgaria is currently in progress,
Environment and Water Minister Ivelina Vasileva said in Varna
Tuesday. The situation along the flow of the Arda is improving
and Kurdzhali dam is not overflowing. The condition of the
Tundzha in the vicinity of Elhovo, however, is concerning.

The situation in Varna is under control, Vasileva added. The
Provadiiska and Anadere rivers have returned to their beds and
the level of the Kamchia is also dropping. Tsonevo dam is
overflowing with over 100 cubic m a second. The level of water
in Ticha dam near Shoumen is 30 cm below the spillway and the
facility is monitored round-the-clock.

There have been no alerts of marauder attacks in the four Varna
villages which were evacuated as a prevention, Interior Minister
Veselin Vouchkov said in turn. Because Tsonevo dam is
overflowing and the possible overflowing of Ticha dam it is
better for the people to remain far from their homes today too.

The situation in Dobrich region is currently deteriorating and
about 200 people were evacuated this morning because of Odrintsi
dam.

The preventive evacuation of people in Varna region is the first
action of this type in Bulgaria and it was completed at full
coordination between all institutions involved, Vuchkov
said.
