2013 Revenue from Drug Production, Cigarette and Alcohol Contraband and Prostitution Stands
At Lv 225 Mln - Statistics

Sofia, June 22 (BTA) - Preliminary, but largely close to final
data of the National Statistical Institute for 2013, show that
the revenue from the production and sale of drugs, cigarette and
alcohol contraband and prostitution amount to 225 million leva.
As a whole, the inclusion of this activity in GDP stands at
0.28 per cent, the President of the National Statistical
Institute, Sergey Tsvetarsky, said in an interview for BTA. The
interview was requested in connection with the forthcoming 135th
anniversary of Bulgaria's national statistics, to be celebrated
on June 25. In nine months there will be more precise
preliminary data for 2014, he added.

There is a surprising increase of the population in the southern
region of Kurdzhali, Tsvetarsky commented. Just as elsewhere in
the country, there, too, natural population growth is negative
- slightly over 2 per 1,000, while migration growth is 12 per
mil within one year. Against the backdrop of the rest of the
development of the country, this could be indicative of a new
phenomenon and election migration could possibly be one of the
reasons, he added.

Tsvetarsky does not want to use terms like "dead souls" and
"phantoms". The difference, which is treated as "dead souls" are
probably people who are very much alive and who live somewhere.
It is quite another matter that they should not probably exist
in this country's electoral registers because they have
terminated their relations with the state and do not live on its
territory. Because of this unmonitored movement, statistics
have to make a temporary snapshot of the real state of affairs
through the visits at people's homes during the census.

Because of the dynamics of life, statistics takes into account
several categories of population - constant residents,
permanently living at a certain address (even with temporary
absences) and well as well as current population, which also
includes people who have come on a temporary basis, which
outlines quite a reliable picture at a certain moment. After the
census, statistics use available sources and events, including
births, deaths and migration, and this is where discrepancies
with civil administrative registration arise. The latter is
based on the existing documents of a living person and what
happens with him or her. However, if such a person has left for
another country but has not informed the relevant municipality
there is no relevant update in the local register.

One of the variants to overcome discrepancies is not to base
electoral registers on civil registration lists, but to create a
register of voters bearing in mind their desire to vote,
Tsvetarsky said.

Otherwise, the average Bulgarian has aged somewhat after 100
years - at 43.2 years, which even by average European standards
is quite high, men live to about 71 and women to 78, and there
is a probability that their heirs will live 15 years more in 70
years. The average Bulgarian receives a salary of 882 leva and
nearly half of that income goes for food, soft drinks and
maintenance of the home. Bulgarians live mainly in cities, own
homes and work in the sphere of services.
