President Plevneliev Has Alerted Security Services about Hacker Attacks on Election Day

Sofia, October 30 (BTA) - During a news briefing on Friday, President Rosen Plevneliev said that he has alerted the State Agency for National Security (SANS) about the hacker attacks on the day of the local elections and the electronic voting referendum.

The head of State commented on the final results of the referendum.

Plevneliev said that these hacker attacks were no coincidence and that their aim was to feed into doubts that electronic voting is unfair and vulnerable to attacks. The President said that this echoed the Kostinbrod case with the excess ballot papers and urged that the hacker attacks and instructions not to give ballot papers to voters should be investigated.

The President said that everything is in the hands of the political parties and the legislature and if they interpreted accurately what had happened, the Election Code should be changed and Parliament should make a decision on how the Central Election Commission will continue to function from now on.

In his statement, Plevneliev said the referendum has shown that today citizens want to participate actively in policy making and are ready to contribute through the means of direct democracy. Plevneliev voiced a hope that the MPs will live up to public expectation and respect the vote of 1.8 million people who supported electronic voting.

Taking a question, Plevneliev said that the referendum and the presidential elections in a year's time were unrelated.
