Bulgaria Celebrates National Awakeners' Day

Sofia, November 1 (BTA) - Bulgaria on Sunday celebrated National
Awakeners' Day, commemorating the intellectual figures,
educators and freedom fighters who have upheld the nation's
intellectual and moral values over the centuries.

President Rosen Plevneliev attended a national flag raising
ceremony outside the offices of his administration. He visited
the National Library to award its Director Boryana Hristova the
President's Honorary Badge for her contribution to promoting
Bulgarian culture and traditions.

Plevneliev announced he will be a patron of the National
Library. He said: "We will make sure that the Bulgarian
government gets closer to you. You need understanding and
support for your sensible projects." He added that the National
Library has a very rich history and possesses the largest stock
of books in the Balkans.

Meanwhile, the Culture Portal (kultura.bg) presented its annual
awards in literature and the humanities for 2014.

National Awakeners' Day was first celebrated in Plovdiv,
Southern Bulgaria, in 1909. In 1923 it became a national
holiday, but in 1945 it was banned by the Communist government,
to be reinstated in 1992.
