Two Mayoral Candidates in Varna Challenge Local Election Results

Varna, on the Black Sea, November 3 (BTA) - Two of the mayoral candidates who ran in the local elections in the Black Sea city of Varna last weekend, are contesting the election outcome. They have moved a joint application to that effect with the local Administrative Court.

The motion is undersigned by Anelia Klissarova, an independent candidate who was nominated by an initiative committee supported by the Bulgarian Socialist Party and Eco-Glasnost, and by Danail Papazov who ran for mayor as the candidate of a local coalition. The applicatioin is also backed by Nikolai Nedkov of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria who was the candidate of the Reformers and Patriots - The Decision for Varna coalition.

The motion asks the court to declare null and void the election of a mayor and the distribution of the mandates in the Varna Municipal Council on account of significant violations in the organization and conduct of the elections, and in the reporting of the results.

The Varna voters elected for a second mayoral term Ivan Portnih.
