Around 10 kg of Honey  on Average Can Be Harvested from Urban Beehives

Sofia, December 16 (BTA) - Around 10 kg of honey on average can be harvested from a beehive in an urban environment, said the creators of the I Have a Bee Foundation, who presented their initiative "1,000,000 Hives" at a BTA-hosted news conference here Wednesday.

According to Trifon Mihaylov, the initiative can attract one million people who are taking care of at least one hive. In his words, urban and amateur beekeeping is accessible for everyone.

For nearly 1,000 leva the foundation can deliver a hive complete with a bee colony to any settlement in Bulgaria and assist the beekeepers in taking care of the bees in the course of one year.

Stefan Zlatev commented that the hives offered by the foundation have an innovative concept allowing the bees to be taken care of as pets. Since the summer, 30 hives have been produced, populated with bees and distributed to Smolyan, Pleven, Sofia and Oslo. The foundation also placed hives at Sofia's National Palace of Culture in the summer but these have not produced a harvest yet.

The foundation started producing honey without any trace of antibiotics and sugars, Zlatev said. The product is sold in two places in Sofia and part of the revenues are used for saving bees.
