Bulgaria Accedes to
Geneva Declaration on Sustainable
Housing and Urban Development

Geneva/Sofia, November 9 (BTA) - Bulgaria jointed the Geneva Declaration on Sustainable Housing and Urban Development. The document was adopted by the Ministers and the Heads of ECE national delegations participating in the seventy-eighth session of the Committee on Housing and Land Management with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) held in Geneva. Participating in the forum on the part of Bulgaria was Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Denitsa Nikolova, her Ministry said.

Addressing the participants, Nikolova said that Bulgaria has gathered valuable experience in the past decade due to which the national policy of urban development has acquired a new dimension. The introduction and successful development of the new integrated approach has become possible due to the EU Cohesion Policy and various integrated mechanisms.

Some 1,800 million leva are being invested in the cities based on 67 integrated plans for urban recovery and development within Operational Programme Regions in Growth 2014-2020. Bulgaria is additionally supported by 20 programmes for European territorial cooperation to achieve its sustainable urban development goals by a resource of over 2,000 million leva. This financing will help ensure well connected and safe peripheral regions through growth and jobs, address climate change and energy dependence, reduce poverty and promote social cohesion. LI/TK
