Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria, February 20 (BTA) - The wineries producing wine from local grape varieties are growing in number, the National Vine and Wine Chamber (NVWC) said in a press release. More than 10 per cent of the wines participating in this year's edition of the VINARIA International Exhibition of Vine Growing and Wine Producing in Plovdiv are competing for the Recommended Wine from Local Grape Variety prize.

NVWC Chief Secretary Rada Videnova commented that the wine samples participating in this year's International Competition for Wine, Rakia, Wine Brandy and Spirits are exceptionally good. The styles presented by the participating wineries are completely different, with the technologists' signatures being clearly distinguishable, she added.

According to wine taster Paul Caputo, this year oenologists show a preference for fresher wines. In the opinion of Krassimir Avramov, long-term member of the international jury, the red wines produced in Bulgaria in the last two years are the best in the last 30 years, despite the unfavourable weather conditions, dry season and poor crop in 2017.

VINARIA 2018 is on at International Fair Plovdiv from February 21 to 25. Available for tasting are the new collections of over 50 Bulgarian and foreign wineries, the press release reads.
