The Council of Ministers Wednesday adopted a programme for compensation of non-household end users of electricity. On July 26, Parliament gave the government seven days to draw up the document.
Electricity prices on the free market in Bulgaria and the region have been trending up so far in July. The average price of electricity in Bulgaria is the third highest in the EU after Hungary and Romania. The increase is the result of power shortages in some regional markets, reduced interconnection transmission capacity in the region, accidents and scheduled repairs, and extreme heat. High prices create an economically unfavourable environment, negatively affect industry and generate inflation.
The compensation will apply to the period between July 1 and December 31, 2024, subject to the State aid rules. It will be equal to 100% of the difference between the actual average monthly exchange price for baseload on the Day Ahead segment of the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange EAD for the month and the base price of BGN 180/MWh for non-household end-users, regardless of the network. No compensation will be paid to non-household end users paying prices below the base price.
