site.btaPM Borissov Confers with NATO Deputy Secretary General Gottemoeller

Sofia, May 4 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov conferred Friday with visiting NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, the government's information service said.

Borissov said that Bulgaria is one of the most loyal members of NATO which has proved itself in NATO operations where dear lives were lost. He said that Bulgaria's Euro-Atlantic path and membership in the EU are strategic priorities of the government.

The Prime Minister said that Bulgaria attaches priority importance to the stability and security in the countries in the Western Balkans and expects that the progress of the applicant countries will be taken into account. "We need to send clear messages about continuation of the political commitment and the practical cooperation with the countries in the region," Borissov said. He dwelled on the periodic manifestations of nationalism and ethnic tension which could lead to tremors in the region, stressing that a commitment by the NATO and EU member states towards these countries will engender more stability.

Borissov briefed his guest on the projects for modernization of the Bulgarian armed forces.

Gottemoeller said that NATO continues to support Bulgaria which she described as a valuable partner with exceptional contribution in the joint operations of the Alliance, particularly in the missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan. The guest praised Bulgaria's role for the expansion of the cooperation between NATO and the EU.
